Kwasen Village

Kwasen Village is a fully imagined, harmoniously integrated 40 acre neighbourhood of residences, parks and retail, in Burnaby, British Columbia. It is an integrated vision where work, cultural diversity, higher education, and a network of transit options are always within precious minutes of home. Kwasen Village will feature the very best community amenities that blend into a lush landscape of storytelling parks, public art pathways, and purposeful green spaces.

Role:
Creative Director & Graphic Designer

Responsibilities:
Brand Strategy, Brand Positioning, Naming, Logo Design, Copywriting, Brochures, Presentation Center, Website, Signage, Video & Photography, Advertising (Print & Digital), Email Marketing, Information Design, Merchandise.

The Kwasen Village brand was designed to convey, in modern form, a story of how the traditions of two indigenous groups, xʷməθkʷəýəm (Musqueam) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) people, became a foundation to support a vision for future communities. Rather than adhere to historical cultural visuals, both groups desired a modern design language for their brand and marketing, where colours were vibrant and graphic elements conveyed a sense of energy and collective thinking. Being inspired by their ancient fabric weaving techniques, I created a modern version of dancing threads that became a leading visual element for the brand.

The Four Guiding Principles for an Indigenous-Led Development

I led the creative vision and execution of a four-part video series that told the story of kʷasən Village and the shared values that are important to these people and their histories on this land.

Principle 1: Honor the Past and Embrace the Future.

Principle 3: Enhance a Sense of Indigenous Heritage

Principle 2: Connect With Land and Water.

Principle 4: Respecting the Land, Building the Future.

The word ‘kwasen’ translates to ‘star’. Using this as a theme, we were able to differentiate the brand from every other real estate project in Vancouver while also adding a spiritual note to the visuals that felt ethereal, calming and trustworthy.
